A Shopper’s Delight: The Future of Retail with IoT

As passionate marketers in the internet of things (IoT) business, the next generation of retail has us primed for a shopping spree. The emerging digital capabilities within retail go far beyond what could have ever been imaged and the proof is in the numbers:

• 56% of smartphone users plan to use their device while shopping (Accenture)

• 85% of shoppers prefer personalized offers reflecting their past shopping behavior (SYNQUERA)

The consumer shopping experience is evolving constantly. Customers have instant access to a multitude of research, price matching opportunities and the ability to shop directly from their smartphones 24 hours a day. It is not only expected, but required of retailers to innovate in order to keep up with their consumers. This means drastic changes in existing strategy and operations.

ThingWorx, PTC and Kalypso have partnered to deliver an experience we call the Smart Connected Store. In our connected store, we offer a way to track and organize data received from customers and products in store and to find and act on demographic trends. We’ve imagined a completely personalized experienced for new age shoppers while enabling retailers to gather better data and provide a personalized experience for their customers.

In our smarter, more connected store concept, retailers can track consumer behavior via sensors embedded within the products though RFID technology.  In store bluetooth beacons track the shopper and her behavior as she moves around.  Information is collected and analyzed with historical shopping data allowing our shopper to receive tailored special offers, insight into pricing competition, and the ability to purchase an item at the lowest price offered.

Enhancing the in-store experience are digital displays that extend the retailers isle far beyond what is simply carried in store. The virtual closets enable our shopper to virtually try on merchandise that may not be available in store but is sitting in inventory at another location or warehoused. The ability for store associates to recommend items based on previous purchase history creates a tailored shopping experience and creates a happy shopper.  ThingWorx enables retailers to organize the data received in stores in order to find and act on demographic trends.
